“Structuring Your Novel: Essential Keys for Writing an Outstanding Story” by K.M. Weiland

I wanted to learn more about plotting a novel and selected the audiobook of K.M. Weiland’s Structuring Your Novel: Essential Keys for Writing an Outstanding Story. Weiland’s book helped me learn writing jargon, such as Inciting Event, The First Plot Point, Conflict, Goal, Motivation, Scene Structure, and additional terms. The narrator, Sonja Field, did an excellent job with inflection, pronunciation, and tone.

Weiland equips readers with a plethora of information. Twice, now, I’ve listened to Structuring Your Novel. Each time, I applied the plot points to my novel. The most helpful part was completing the homework of watching Pride and Prejudice, Ender’s Game, and Master and Commander. I could stop the video and reread Weiland’s text for a more precise understanding.

If you could benefit from or enjoy a more structured approach to writing, this book might be for you. Other excellent resources on plotting and structuring a novel include Plot & Structure by James Scott Bell. I also highly recommend James L. Rubart’s audiobook rendition of How to Write a Novel Using the Snowflake Method by Randy Ingermanson.
