I purchased a paperback copy of The Weight of Glory by C.S. Lewis. Still, I found that listening to the complete C.S. Lewis Essential Audio Library collection was not only more fun but also more convenient for road trips and running errands. The introduction alone, by Walter Hooper, was well worth the cost of this audio version. I am a fan of British accents, and this collection contains several British narrators, all exceptional.
Besides learning about Lewis’s nurse, the Scotsman Alec Ross, some of my favorite glimmers throughout the text included: what God thinks of us is a lot more important than what we think of him; moral decisions and conscience; and fodder for lively denominational discussions over unanswerable intuitions of glossolalia, or fanatical temperance.
In The Weight of Glory, Lewis also teaches readers how to “drink” from God’s fountain of joy. If we, as Christians, take life too seriously without a heavy dose of fun, we will miss out on the blessings our heavenly Father has for us. Through the reading of The Weight of Glory, I received a glimpse into what it must have been like to sit next to Lewis and understand what the author and scholar freely gave to us.
If you enjoy the essays of C.S. Lewis or want to sample some of his fictional books, you may enjoy The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, and The Great Divorce.
