I enjoyed the first two books in Mary Connealy’s Golden State Treasure series and wanted to read the third. Not only do I love the author’s writing, but I also enjoy Barbara McCullough’s narration. To her credit, she alters tone, cadence, and pitch for each character in the novel, and I never stop the narrative to wonder who is speaking.
Riches Beyond Measure: Golden State Treasure, Book 3 by Mary Connealy didn’t disappoint. I learned more about Annie Lane, Cord Westbrook, and the Two Harts Ranch near Dorada Rio, California. I had fun watching Cord and Josh rope and brand a heifer that ran back to its red-and-white Hereford mama.
Chapter 28 was my favorite. I visualized the white Victorian—neglected yet elegant—dedicated as the future home of the Children of the Hart School for Orphans. I could see the children descending the staircase, making their way to the family-style table, and enjoying a home-cooked meal. The kids laughed as if they were all part of one happy family, and loved for being themselves.
Another benefit of reading Book 3 of the Golden State Treasure series is learning more about the conquistadores and the treasure of 1875. I never imagined finding buried treasure as Connealy presented it in the novel, and I appreciated her imagination. Throughout the storyline, the sheer fun of traveling with the Hart family and their acquaintances kept me engaged.
