“A Voice in the Wind: Mark of the Lion Book 1” by Francine Rivers

I’m a Francine Rivers fan because I learn a great deal about culture and history through her stories, and I have enjoyed several of her books. I had a slow start in A Voice in the Wind: Mark of the Lion Series, Book 1, because I don’t usually read about gladiators or enjoy barbaric fight scenes. However, once Rivers hooked me with her exquisite characterization and storyline, I gained a deeper understanding of the historical context of the time, as well as the biblical background.

Richard Ferrone narrated this audiobook. At first, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy the story of Hadassah, a Jewish woman enslaved, told in a man’s voice. But Ferrone didn’t disappoint. His dramatic and profound voice effectively captured the excitement and tension of the story, and I couldn’t stop listening.

One stand-out character was the soulless Julia, who will captivate your interest and send shivers down your spine. Rarely do I finish a novel, sit back, and wonder psychologically how God could have created such a human being. Shockingly, one of my favorite characters turned out to be a gladiator named Atretes. I found myself feeling compassionate toward this fierce warrior, whose emotions were as intense as those of any trainer battling for his freedom. Once again, Rivers skillfully weaves her narrative magic through the story, hooking readers like me into reading book 2.

If you enjoy historical fiction, including narratives that offer insight into culture, geography, and eras from a historical perspective, this book may become your next favorite read. If you enjoy East of Eden by John Steinbeck, The Women and The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah, and Alaska by James A. Michener, you will enjoy the audiobooks of A Voice in the Wind: Mark of the Lion Series Book 1.
