“Between Sisters” by Kristin Hannah

I’m a fan of Kristin Hannah. I selected Between Sisters and wondered how I would like her contemporary fiction compared to her historical fiction books. One of my favorite parts about the novel is how the flawed characters who are stuck in the past struggle to overcome their hardships.

At first, I didn’t believe the sisters, Meghann Dontess and Claire Cavenaugh, would stand a chance of overcoming and mending their complex past. Walking on eggshells, both sisters gave up on ever developing a close bond but later learned to accept their differences and compromise.

My heart went out to Meghann because she assumed responsibility for her sister growing up in a family where one parent left physically and the other emotionally. Meghann took care of everything until she couldn’t.

Claire’s daughter, Alison, becomes a catalyst for family healing. Her Little Mermaid sheets, French braids, and Groovy Girl doll won my heart and provided emotional relief throughout the narrative.

If you enjoy reading about family dysfunction and the emotional hardship and healing between relatives, this might be the book for you. If you thrive on more historical novels, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility explore friendship and struggles amongst sisters.
